Just days after the Silhouette Challenge which originated on Tik Tok exploded across all social media platforms, women are now being warned to reconsider taking off their clothes when participating in the challenge. This comes after some men started posting videos instructing other men on how to remove the red filter used in the challenge in order to see the women’s unedited nude or semi-nude videos.

In the Silhouette challenge the subjects, usually women, start by walking in front of a camera while wearing comfy clothing like oversized T-shirts, pyjamas, bathrobes etc. The person walks into a door frame and strikes a sexy pose — which is when the filter is added. The filter applies dark shadows to most of the screen, including the person, but uses red-tinted light to show the outline of the person’s body.

Most women then change into something much more revealing, and some even go nude, for the filtered part of the video to better show off the outline of their figure. However, thanks to the shadowy effect of the filter, the women can preserve their modesty as their actual bodies are almost entirely obscured.

For the Silhouette challenge, participants use a mash-up of Canadian American singer Paul Anka’s song, “Put Your Head On My Shoulder,” which is later slowed down and transitioned into Doja Cat’s “Streets.”

Some lecherous men are now spoiling the fun of the challenge by posting videos on social media instructing other men on how to remove the filter to see the raw unedited images.

Kai Lee, a photographer who runs a TikTok account called lostvsnryshots has warned women to think twice before removing their clothing for the challenge. Said Kai,

“I keep seeing the Silhouette Challenge on my For You page, and even though they’re all really cute and creative and y’all look bomb in them, just make sure you’re being cognizant of what you’re wearing before you actually do all the editing for the final product.

“Because anyone can easily take those images and revert them back to the original.

“So if you’re wearing a bra and panties, or if you’re nude, or whatever you did before you applied the editing to create that shadow look, just know that it’s really easy to just put it back to the original.”

Some people are also demanding that Youtube removes all the videos which have instructions on how to remove the filter arguing that it is a violation of consent. EJ Dickson who is a culture writer for Rolling Stone wrote:

“Obviously not linking, but there are videos all over YouTube offering tutorials for how to ‘remove’ the red filter for TikTok’s Silhouette Challenge, in which women dance nude or partially nude in silhouette.

“This is a huge consent violation and @YouTube should remove them ASAP.”
