As pressure mounts on everyone around the world to call out racism and discrimination of all sorts, content producers and many streaming services have started reviewing their content which they consider racially sensitive.

The move saw big streaming services like HBO Max removing “Gone With The Wind” from its platform following growing concerns over racial injustices after the death of George Floyd.

As such, local content has not been spared either.

A recent case has been of Leon Schuster’s comedic content has been flagged and pulled down by Showmax.

But Mzansi ain’t happy at all.

For over the years, the African filmmaker Leon Schuster has made a whole chunk load of comedy content that has been recently deemed racially insensitive.

In one movie, Mama Jack, he plays the black lady character using blackface – something many believe is racist and its implications are deeply rooted in oppression.

Film experts argue that Blackface has long been a method of oppression engineered in the 1800s where producers mocked black people and used it to spread ideologies in support of slavery.

Though Blackface has been prioritized and targeted from the film industry. The criteria for pulling down content has generally been around content that promotes blatant and systematic racism.

Amongst those films pulled down are: Mr. Bones, Mama Jack, You Must Be Joking, You Must Be Joking Too, Oh Schucks…It’s Schuster, Sweet ‘n Short, Schuks! Pay Back the Money, and Frank and Fearless.

Leon Schuster has been amongst a few pioneers of anti-racism themes in South African film industry.

South Africans on Twitter were quick to lash out on the streaming service over the recent developments with many calling out Showmax for its failure to recognize what they believe was content seeking to address racism rather than promoting the vice.
