Netflix’s endorsement of Mzansi’s most hyped telenovela, Queen Sono which stars Pearl Thusi came to an end this week after the streaming service claimed it has to stop production and streaming of the second season due to Covid-19 scares.

Surprisingly, Queen Sono was given a green light a few months ago to continue production for season two.

But Netflix has had a change of heart and totally cancelled the show.

Speaking on the reasons of the cancellation, Netflix’s spokesperson in South Africa said there were scares over the rise in Covid-19 cases and its effect on the production team and revenues.

“We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with season 2 of ‘Queen Sono’.

We are incredibly proud of the Diprente team for sharing their audacious vision and bringing it to life with Netflix.

A huge thank you to our fans across the world for the love shared for our first African Original series.

Netflix is also grateful to the amazing efforts shown by the cast and crew for their stellar efforts in creating this show for our members around the world.” said the spokesperson for Netflix.

Queen Sono had managed to pull a considerable amout of view on Netflix, however, reports indicate that they were not convincing for the streaming service to go on with the production.

Reports have claimed that this, coupled with the boring storyline the show had, could have been one driving factor for it to get booted out of the popular streaming service.

Reacting to the news, the distraught lead actor of the Diprente produced film, Pearl Thusi had nothing to say but to thank Netflix for the opportunity it gave her and the team in the production of the first Netflix Original series to come from Africa.

“It’s so incredible that we as a team had a lifetime opportunity to make history together as there will never be another ‘first’ African Netflix Original Series.

I’m proud of the work we did, but everything happens for a reason.

I am excited about what the future holds,” she said.
