Legendary film actor Sir Ian Holm has died at the age of 88.

His agent confirmed his demise was due to a nervous system disorder that was affecting his movement as he aged.

“It is with great sadness we can confirm that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88,” his agent said in a statement.

He died peacefully in hospital with his family and career, the statement read.

He established a reputation as a talented and reliable actor, so much that he got international fame as Bilbo Baggins from the character he plaid in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.

He played a lot of incredible characters and many would remember him for his memorable performances as the android Ash in Alien, the professional coach in Chariots of Fire and Dr Willis the physician who treated George III in The Madness of King George.

He is one of the most awarded performers in the history of cinema.

Amongst Baftas and Oscar nominations he achieved over the years through numerous acts he played, he earned a CBE in 1989 and had a Knighthood bestowed unto him in 1998 for his contribution to the film industry.
