Bad news for all carnival lovers as the much anticipated Victoria Falls Carnival will not be held this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  The biggest party of the year in Africa will not take place this year due to the containment measures set in place by the government to curb the spreading of coronavirus.

Organizers of the event who had hoped to go ahead with the party with strict adherence to Covid-19 safety guidelines were dealt with a major blow when the government rejected their proposal.

Speaking during an interview with a local publication, The Chronicle, the carnival spokesperson Emmanuel Tivatyi affirmed that they won’t be any carnival this year.

“There’s no carnival this year. We called it quits after the Government rejected our proposal to host the event due to the Covid-19 pandemic.”

“The National Arts Council of Zimbabwe whom we had submitted our request to indicated that they wouldn’t be in a position to sanction the carnival given the insight from the Ministry of Health with regards to functions like festivals.

So definitely, we won’t be hosting the carnival,” Tivatyi said.

For the past seven years, the three-day carnival has been held from December 29 culminating with a fireworks display on New Year’s Eve. It is considered to be the biggest  New Year’s Eve party in the SADC region as the action-packed carnival is no ordinary event. Each year it is always packed with party trains, booze, and lots of adrenaline-pumping activities.

The event organizers, however, promised that next year’s carnival will be big and better with some of the best DJ’s and artists headlining the event.

“We’ll see next year. Definitely when we do host it, it’ll be something big and a major comeback,” he said.
