Amapiano Sensation Gee Six Five Released ‘Obani Lababantu‘ While Working On Her PhD At UKZN
Gee Six Five is proof that age is just a number if one is determined to make it in what they love.
She released her first fire Amapiano single Obani Lababantu last Thursday and the support she received is overwhelming.
The 65-year-old – real name Olpha Selepe from Newcastle in Kwazulu Natal has been trending on social media since a clip of her song Obani Lababantu went viral.
Many just couldn’t believe someone her age would jump into music – especially on a contemporary Amapiano beat that is socially seen as music for the young folk, Ama2K.
Others found themselves something to crack their ribs to as they find the song humourous.
Gogo Olpha has revealed that her intentions in making the banger were that she wanted to prove it to her peers and everyone that age is just a number, and old folks too would like to have a feel of the industry limelight.
She says her music is also meant to encourage people about the importance of education.
Her message on the song is clear. She talks about people pointing fingers and blaming others for the problems they face instead of fixing problems themselves.
Education is one aspect of her life she takes seriously.
She has revealed that she started working on the sensational track while studying towards her PhD in Education at UKZN.
“I have education and human resources management diplomas, an advanced diploma and a masters in education, now I’m working on a PhD,” she says.
Gee Six Five is a retiree from Umgungundlovu TVET College where she worked as a manager.
Talking to Sunbuzz about what she intends to make out of her fame, she says she isn’t intending to behave like a teenager in her videos but wants to show people that Amapiano are loved by both young and old.
She will be making more music in no time.
“Old people can blend in wherever they want and should never sell themselves short. The love I’ve received is overwhelming. I’m planning to do more music.”
